What’s Goin’ On?
With so much going on this Spring, we catch up with a few alums off doing terrific things at the end of this school year! If you have news (a new PR, a community initiative, college acceptance, etc) please send us an email, facebook, instagram, twitter or something letting us know what’s going on! We want to know what’s going on in your life. Now, on to the good stuff:
Our STRIVEr of the Month is Northside Prep’s (Chicago’s) Malcolm Grba (STRIVE-Peru, ‘13). Malcolm – only a junior – has been tearing up the track through the frigid Chicago winter, scaring the 2-minute barrier in the 800m (2:00 indoors and 2:01 outdoors so far) as well as putting up blazing fast times in the 400m and mile. Moreover, Malcolm’s team won the Indoor City Championships and Malcolm got some TV time (video here)! Congrats, Malcolm!
Laurel Sheffield (STRIVE-Peru, ‘13) has also had a terrific 2014 on the track. The Rockbridge (Virginia) senior has been setting PRs left and right the past few months, including breaking 5:30 in the mile for the first time (5:27) and besting her 2-mile time by nearly 10 seconds (11:40). We’ll be following Laurel to see what she can do for the remainder of the season!
Marielle Hall (Group Leader and College Intern, STRIVE-Peru) has been having an unbelievable senior season at the University of Texas. After a great cross country season, Marielle has been showing her full potential this Spring, running 15:19.26 for 5000m at the Stanford Invitational on March 4 – the #1 Division I time in the country by almost 10 seconds. Marielle also sits at #3 on the Division I 1500m performance list with a 4:14.88 from the Penn Relays. We can’t wait to see her chase her first National Title in the coming month!
Finally, STRIVE-Peru leader, administrator, and resident professional runner, Tyler Andrews, has had quite the Spring season. After setting a World Record for the treadmill half-marathon on March 1st, Ty returned to South America to continue training at altitude. In his Marathon debut, Tyler finished in 29th place out of 36,000 runners in a time of 2:21:33 (while rocking the STRIVE singlet). You can follow Ty’s training and ramblings at www.strivetrips.org/the-blog.
Summer is nearly here! Believe it or not, the school-year will be over all too soon and it’ll be time to head off for a summer of service, athletics, and adventure with STRIVE! What’s that? You haven’t signed up yet??
Don’t worry, there’s still a few more spots left in some of our programs and you can apply online! As of April 30, there is space in
STRIVE-Peru (July 20-August 10)
STRIVE-Kenya (June 21-July 12)
STRIVE-Kenya (July 13-August 3)
STRIVE Forward – Funding of the STRIVE Center Still Underway
We’ve had great success with Fundraising for our development of the STRIVE Center – a community center we’re developing in rural Peru. With STRIVE staff already on the ground in Peru, it’s exciting for us to begin a season of work in the Center, with a hope of bringing it into fruition for STRIVErs to offer educational resources to local Peruvians over the coming months and years.
In the mean time, you can still help support the Center! Please visit our fundraising page at www.youcaring.com/STRIVE where you can learn more about our goals and programs and support.
Calling All College Students!
As mentioned above, we are still accepting applications for a last college intern to join the STRIVE College Intern Program (SCIP). If you’re interested in a great summer of Service, Athletics, and Adventure, all while gaining valuable work experience in education, mentoring, and coaching, please visit the SCIP webpage and contact Ty at Tyler@strivetrips.org!
We’ve heard from some amazing students over the last few months since announcing our new STRIVE Scholarship program. We kicked things off with announcing $5000 in new scholarships and the applications began rolling in. We’ve already given out some of these funds, but there are still opportunities available for exceptional and passionate student-athletes.
Please visit the scholarship page for more info on how to apply!
